Since recently, the South Pacific has been making its way into the cups and consciousness of people around the globe with a unique beverage. Kava drinks, with their earthy flavour and relaxing effects, have won the hearts of islanders, but is it really a smart choice for beverages? What exactly is kava, and why is it gaining such popularity?

My husband often sails to the Pacific Islands and he decided to bring some Kava drinks back home from Fiji this time, I figured I needed to let my readers know about this drink.

Firstly;

What is Kava?

Kava, scientifically known as Piper methysticum, is a plant native to the South Pacific islands. For centuries, Pacific Islanders have used kava in traditional ceremonies and social gatherings. The drink is made from the root of the kava plant, which is ground into a powder and mixed with water to create a muddy-looking beverage.

The active ingredients in kava, called kavalactones, cause the effects on the human body and mind. These compounds interact with the brain's neurotransmitters, potentially promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety.

What do Kava Drinks taste like?

Honestly, it tastes like watered-down mud or a root boil with a Matcha-like bitterness to it. It has a strong earthy taste to it and even Pacific Islanders aren't fond of the taste. They drink it for the effects.

What does Kava do to your Body?

Kava drinks can make you feel calm and relaxed, similar to what certain herbal drugs do. Many users say it makes them more sociable and at ease, with reduced anxiety and stress. Some even say it brings mild euphoria.

Physically, kava can cause a numbing sensation in the mouth and throat, which is considered normal. It may also lead to increased urination and decreased appetite. However, it's important to note that everyone's experience with kava can be different, and effects can vary based on the strength of the drink and individual tolerance. A lot like alcohol.

Can you drink Kava while Pregnant?

No, it's not advised to drink Kava while pregnant. While traditional use in Pacific Island cultures included kava consumption during pregnancy, modern medical advice suggests avoiding kava drinks while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Very little research has been done on Kava and its effects, so it's best to consult with a healthcare provider before consuming kava drinks during pregnancy. Or we suggest avoiding it altogether.

Is Kava Drinks Halal?

Kava is halal on the grounds of being a non-alcoholic drink, however, due to its effects on the body that causes similar symptoms to being drugged or drunk, it's not certified as a halal consumable.

Is Kava Drinks Vegan?

Yes, just like Coffee, Kava Drinks is vegan. It's made from a root that grows in the Pacific Islands of Fiji and Vanuatu.

How to Drink Kava?

Traditionally, kava is prepared by mixing the ground root with water and straining it through a cloth. The liquid is then consumed in one gulp, often followed by a fruit chaser to get ride of the bitter taste.

You can also drink Kava as;

  • Kava drink Cocktail

  • Instant kava sachets: Powdered form that easily mixes with water. (This is commonly found in supermarkets in Fiji)

  • Kava tea bags: Similar to regular tea bags, offering a milder experience.

  • Kava shots or capsules: For those who want only the effects and not the peculiar taste.

When trying kava for the first time, it's recommended to start with a small amount and see how your body reacts.

Some people may experience nausea or skin reactions, especially if consumed on an empty stomach.

When buying kava, look for products that use "noble" kava varieties, which are considered safer for consumption. Always check the source and quality of the kava you're purchasing, especially when buying online.

Is Kava safer than alcohol?

Many people turn to kava as an alternative to alcohol, seeking its calming effects without the hangover. While kava doesn't impair judgment or coordination to the same extent as alcohol, it's not without risks. Kava doesn't typically lead to addiction or withdrawal symptoms, which can be advantages over alcohol.

However, excessive use of kava, particularly when combined with alcohol or other drugs, can lead to liver problems. It's important to use kava in moderation, just as with any substance that affects the body and mind.

Are Kava Drinks Bad for the Liver?

If you have any liver condition, please refrain from drinking Kava as it directly affects the liver. In general, if you have any other health condition, it's best to avoid Kava at all costs.

Is Kava Drinks legal in the US?

Yes, kava is legal in the United States. It's classified as a dietary supplement by the FDA, which means it's legal to buy, sell, and consume.

However, the FDA has issued warnings about potential liver damage associated with kava use, leading to some controversy and regulation in other countries like Australia kava can only be legally marketed as a food product when it's either a beverage prepared solely by mixing kava with cold water, or sold as dried or raw kava root.

Kava's status as a supplement means it's not as tightly regulated as pharmaceuticals in the US. This makes it all the more important to purchase from reputable sources and use them responsibly.

Where to buy Kava Drinks?

As kava's popularity grows, so do the options for purchasing it. You can find kava drinks in:

As a general rule, it's best to avoid driving after consuming any substance that affects your mental state, including kava.

Benefits of Kava

While the harms are higher, there are still some benefits to drinking Kava such as :

  1. Anxiety reduction: Many users report feeling calmer and less anxious after consuming kava.

  2. Improved sleep: The relaxing effects may help with falling asleep and improving sleep quality.

  3. Pain relief: Some studies suggest kava may have mild pain-relieving properties.

  4. Social lubricant: In Pacific Island cultures, kava is used to facilitate social bonding and communication.

  5. Muscle relaxation: The numbing effect of kava may help with muscle tension and spasms.

In conclusion;

As with any substance that affects your body and mind, it's important to take it in moderation as many health conditions caused by Kava are still under study. If you're curious about trying kava drinks, try the tea bag. This way you can control the level of Kava essence in your drink by quickly dipping it in, or leaving it in for long.
